‘Real Conversations. Real Learning. Real Impact’.

Emlalatini Development Centre (EDC) has launched a student-led educational podcast, ‘EDC Unfiltered’, to showcase its unique educational ecosystem and raise awareness about Open and Distance Learning (ODL).

Originally known as an upgrading school, EDC underwent a significant transformation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To ensure continuity during lockdowns, the institution transitioned from paper-based schooling to technology-enabled education.

This shift positioned EDC as a leading ODL institution in Eswatini, utilising Information and Communication Technologies to provide flexible, affordable and high-quality education to marginalised youth and adults across the SADC region.

Operating via a blended model, EDC combines face-to-face classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays with continuous online support throughout the week.

Due to the flexible framework, the institution serves learners from diverse backgrounds and life circumstances, providing a vital alternative to conventional public and private schooling.

‘EDC Unfiltered’ was conceived to bridge the gap between the institution and the public.

The platform aims to share learner experiences, promote educational innovation, discuss youth development and strengthen community engagement.

It also serves as an essential marketing and outreach tool.

In line with Eswatini’s national transition from Outcomes-Based Education to Competency-Based Education,

EDC ensured that students took absolute ownership of the project.

Following a call for auditions on social media and a rigorous selection process, three students were chosen as official hosts: Lindani Khumalo, Andiswa Ndzinisa and Kevin McFadden.

The title ‘EDC Unfiltered’ was also chosen via a student vote on the institution’s digital platforms.

Episodes are recorded every Wednesday at the EDC Library using specialised equipment donated by the Commonwealth of Learning.

Once edited, episodes are released every Friday across EDC’s digital platforms, including its official YouTube channel, with listeners notified via social media.

The debut episode was recorded on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

This first installment introduces the three student hosts, outlines the podcast’s purpose and provides listeners with an overview of EDC’s technology-enabled approach to distance learning.

Ultimately, ‘EDC Unfiltered’ represents far more than a media project, it is a dynamic platform for student voices and community engagement.

Through authentic conversations, EDC hopes to showcase how flexible open education can transform lives in Eswatini and beyond.
