The Hidden Hurt within the Church

One of the deepest wounds many believers carry does not come from the outside world but it is from within the church. It is the sting of being judged, shamed, or excluded by fellow Christians. Though the Church is meant to be a refuge of love, healing and restoration, it too often becomes a space marked by quiet competition, harsh comparisons and spiritual superiority. Why does this happen, why do those who have been saved by grace sometimes become the harshest critics of one another?.

When Appearances Replace Authentic Faith

One major reason is the temptation to measure righteousness outwardly rather than inwardly. When faith becomes a checklist of appearances, church attendance, clothing, titles, or visible service, it can create a culture of judgment instead of grace. Jesus addressed this when He confronted the Pharisees, who were more concerned with how things looked than the condition of their hearts. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside is full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean,” (Matthew 23:27).

Christians can fall into this same trap, assuming that someone’s spiritual depth can be judged by how they dress, how they pray, or how they behave publicly. Instead of walking in humility and remembering that all have sinned and fall short (Romans 3:23), believers sometimes create a hierarchy of holiness and that is where judgment begins.

How Insecurity and Unhealed Pain Fuel Judgment

Judgmental behaviour can also stem from personal insecurity, unresolved pain, or lack of discipleship. Sometimes Christians judge others because it distracts from their own struggles. When people haven’t experienced the full healing and acceptance of God’s grace, they may feel the need to criticize others to feel better about them.

What can churches do about the hidden hurt within the church?

Churches have a responsibility to foster a culture of grace, not guilt. Here are a few steps that can help fight judgmental attitudes within the body of Christ:

  • Preach the whole gospel: Grace must be more than a onetime salvation message. Churches should constantly emphasize God’s mercy, love, and the ongoing process of sanctification.
  • Disciple deeply, not just widely: Shallow Christianity leads to surface level comparisons. Discipleship that goes deep teaches people to love as Christ loved unconditionally and without pride.
  • Promote vulnerability and testimony: When leaders and members share their imperfections and how God is still working on them, it tears down walls of perfectionism and opens hearts to compassion.
  • Correct with compassion: There is a place for accountability, but it must be done gently and in love (Galatians 6:1), never to shame but to restore.

Reflecting Christ's Love from the Inside Out

At the end of the day, we must remember; Jesus did not die for perfect people, He died for the broken, the lost, the struggling, people just like you and me. The church should reflect that same heart, becoming a place where individuals are not afraid of being judged but hopeful of being transformed. If we want the world to know we are Christians by our love, that love must first be evident within the Church. Grace is not just a gift we receive; it is also a gift we are called to extend.
