MBABANE – A new chapter in Eswatini football development began yesterday as Spanish coach Tomeu Perello Palou was unveiled to spearhead FIFA’s talent pathway.

The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) yesterday introduced him as the country’s Technical Development Scheme (TDS) tactician during a press conference at Sigwaca House.

Palou has been deployed by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) to lead the country’s football development programme, which was introduced in Eswatini in 2023. He is expected to sign a reported two-year contract, with an option to extend, once his work permit is finalised. Spain recently bagged their second FIFA World Cup title after edging Argentina to a 1-0 extra-time defeat.

His responsibilities will include overseeing and strengthening football development structures across the country, with particular emphasis on talent identification and player progression.

Eswatini is one of four countries in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) region selected to benefit from the programme.

The FIFA Talent Academy Programme currently caters for 20 boys and girls based at Evelyn Baring School. The players, aged under 13 and under 15, were selected from across the country’s regions and will also benefit from development activities at four regional centres.

EFA Chief Executive Officer Frederick Mngomezulu said the association’s long-term objective is to produce players capable of competing at the highest level.

“We have the core responsibility to produce players to the elite level – players who can represent our national teams, both women and men. That requires us to employ several techniques, and one critical area is talent identification. We wanted a country that portrays a similar football culture to ours,” Mngomezulu said.

Palou said he is excited to begin his new role and believes Eswatini possesses significant potential.

“I am here looking forward to accepting the challenge with EFA to develop the talent in Eswatini. I believe, and I am sure, that there is a lot of talent in this country. As the CEO has said, I have already seen some things and I am pretty sure we can develop the talent,” he said.

FIFA Regional Technical Consultant Serame Letsoaka said the initiative stemmed from research into global football trends.

“We analysed the pattern of every FIFA World Cup and noticed that some countries are consistently present. We then asked how we could close the gap between the traditional powers and smaller nations. That is why the TDS was introduced, providing funding and technical support to help improve football development. National teams often have limited preparation time before tournaments such as COSAFA, but players developed through the Evelyn programme will benefit from long-term grooming,” he said.

Letsoaka added that FIFA would cover Palou’s salary, transport and accommodation throughout his tenure under the EFA agreement.

Palou brings extensive international coaching experience, including a spell in Saudi Arabia with Al Nassr, where he worked within the club’s youth development structures.
