MONENI – The right to privacy regarding information on the phone sparked off a national debate recently.
This was after a woman was arrested for snooping through her husband’s WhatsApp messages.
The husband was condemned for preferring charges against his wife, with certain organisations arguing that there is no privacy in marriage.
This time, unmarried partners wrestled over a phone, as the man wanted to see calls and messages on his girlfriend’s phone. The woman refused, citing privacy and confidentiality.
The refusal led to a fight, which resulted in the death of the man.
This is one of the horrifying cases of gender-based violence (GBV) in the country.
Sources said trouble started when the man (40) suspected that his girlfriend was cheating on him. At the peak of the quarrel, Bonginkosi Thwala of Malindza was allegedly stabbed to death by his girlfriend, Lindelwa Mkhatshwa of Moneni, under Manzini South Inkhundla.
The deceased, Thwala, succumbed to his injuries while at his rented flat at Moneni, where the incident occurred. According to a source, he was staying with his girlfriend who is now facing a murder charge.
The source revealed that the deceased is not from Moneni, but his place of employment was in Manzini. He revealed that they were only four months into the relationship. However, it has been established that the accused person is a resident of Moneni.
The source explained that the couple was living together at the deceased’s rented flat, but the accused person survived on piece jobs, which sometimes took her away from home for a couple of days. The latest piece job took her away from Thwala for a month.
He managed to remain in the house alone for the duration of a month. “However, on her return, she got a call from another person offering her a piece job, but this time, it was only three days. She then packed her bags and left for the job without notifying her boyfriend about it,” he said.
He revealed that the deceased only got to know about her return from the initial job through word of mouth but did not find her in the house. According to the source, the deceased waited the whole night for her return, but she did not come, until after three days. He said that the two had an argument as the deceased demanded to know where she was coming from. He narrated that the deceased was suspecting that his partner was cheating on him and that she was with her other partner for the three days.
The deceased is said to have demanded to examine the phone of the accused person to confirm his claims but she refused.
