MBABANE – Madlangampisi Member of Parliament (MP) Allen Vilane has proposed that the scholarship application process be done at tinkhundla centres.

According to the legislator, this will assist in facilitating easier support of the vulnerable, especially in rural areas.

The legislator raised the issue during the Ministry of Labour and Social Security Second Quarter Performance Report Portfolio Committee debate in Parliament recently.

According to the government website, eligible students for scholarship are those who have secured acceptance into universities and colleges within Eswatini as well as in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries of Botswana, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Kenya (excluding South Africa and Namibia).

On the MP’s proposal, the ministry revealed that it will consider logistics of implementations.

“The ministry notes that some of these initiatives may be stalled due to the lack of systems integration at the tinkhundla centres, such systems which are pertinent in establishing efficiencies and economic support to the students during application stage and after,” reads a response of the ministry on the matter.

It should be mentioned that the scholarship application process entails that applications are submitted online via https://www.slas.gov.sz and students must have acceptance letters and valid high school certificates to qualify and are also advised to review the Government Priority List of study programmes available on the ministry’s website and Facebook page before applying.
