MBABANE – Government has refuted reports that one of the third country nationals in the country is on a hunger strike.

This comes after a statement issued by a United States-based legal firm which alleged that one of the third country nationals who arrived from the US had stopped eating.

In a press statement issued yesterday, the Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini said it immediately dispatched a team to verify the claims. The team found that the individual was in good health and spirits.

Acting Government Spokesperson Thabile Mdluli, said the man explained that he was not on a hunger strike, but rather fasting and praying because he misses his family.

“He is currently taking liquids as part of his fasting process. He also mentioned that he remains in constant contact with his family and is able to communicate with his US lawyers,” said Mdluli.

She said government wanted to assure the nation and all concerned parties that the third country nationals in Eswatini are being properly looked after.

“They are in good hands and are receiving physical and psychosocial support, including counselling. They are also provided with comprehensive healthcare to ensure their physical well-being,” she said.

Mdluli further stated that the Government of Eswatini respects freedom of religion as a fundamental human right.

“The third country nationals are allowed to practise their faith through worship, prayer and spiritual guidance.

Government has no intention to interfere with their religious practices. However, the individual will be monitored to ensure that his prayer and fasting do not affect his health,” she said.
