The National Maize Corporation (NMC), a Category A public enterprise under the Ministry of Agriculture, is mandated to protect the local grain industry from cheap imports while promoting the commercialisation of grain production in pursuit of national self-sufficiency in staple grains.
In a statement issued on Friday June 27, 2025, NMC Chief Executive Officer Mavela Vilane announced that the Corporation will begin operating its regional depots from July 1, 2025. These Depots are strategically located across all four regions of the country: NMC Headquarters in Matsapha in the Manzini Region, Ntfonjeni in Hhohho, Ngwempisi under Manzini KaLanga in Lubombo and Madulini in the Shiselweni Region.
Farmers in various regions can now deliver their maize harvests to the nearest Depot, enhancing their access to markets while reducing transportation costs. To further ease the burden, NMC offers transportation support to farmers at subsidised rates.
Farmers are encouraged to consult their local extension officers (balimisi) regarding moisture testing techniques, as NMC will only accept maize with a moisture content of 14 per cent or less. In addition, maize must be free from foreign matter and any harmful substances.
Depots will be open from July 1 to September 30, 2025. However, the Madulini Depot and the NMC Head Office in Matsapha will continue to receive white maize and beans all year-round.
