For many, the journey of faith often begins not with a blinding revelation, but with simple, routine church attendance. Church, initially, serves as a place of social obligation, cultural habit or quiet curiosity. However, the shift occurs when the routine is interrupted.
This week, Andile Simelane, a 30-year-old primary school teacher from Kontjingila, Hlatikhulu serves at Mangcongco Primary School and attends the United Apostolic Faith Church under the leadership of Pastor SG Gwebu, shares his encounter with the Holy Spirit.
Simelane recounted a deep spiritual encounter during a youth revival in 2011 that assurably changed his life. The preacher, that day, spoke with quiet confidence, not just explaining Scripture, but unearthing a living truth. While Simelane initially listened politely, his attention shifted when a single phrase, ‘You are not alone’, detached itself from the sermon and resonated deep within him. He heard a voice behind the preacher’s, addressing the secret loneliness and struggle he carried.
The sermon became a direct dialogue. “Every description of grace felt like a personal invitation, and conviction of sin landed not as an accusation, but as the kind hand of a healer ready to heal,” he recalls. Simelane identified with the prodigal son and the disciples in the storm, and in that moment, he felt the words of Christ, ‘Peace, be still’, calming the storm within his soul. He recalls tears of release flowing, feeling seen, at peace and loved. “I felt like the weight I carried was lifted, not because the truth of God’s love had shouldered it,” Simelane testifies.
“When the preacher made an alter call, it was a call to come home; to surrender and simply receive His eternal grace,” he shares, adding that it was a fresh homecoming, a re-alignment of a heart that had slowly wandered. Adding, he shares that he walked out of the service with a settled peace and the undeniable presence of God, a change echoed in John 1:12: ‘Yet to all who did receive Him… He gave the right to become children of God’.
The change was complete in his soul. The pressure to succeed based on his own performance was replaced by the knowledge that his worth was secured by his Creator’s unwavering love. “My life shifted from ‘my story’ to being part of ‘His story’, and I found purpose in my relationship with Christ, rather than personal achievement. Simelane also shares that his anxiety was slowly replaced by a deep peace, knowing he was held by a God infinitely wiser and stronger. “Old habits lost their power, as my heart began to desire to love and forgive others, not out of obligation, but out of gratitude,” he said.
Simelane’s journey is one of progressive transformation. Though there are days of doubt and struggle, he maintains a core certainty: He is never lost. His Word is a lamp to his feet, and God’s grace remains his unfailing safety net, making the journey the greatest adventure.
Simelane’s words to those who are still finding their path in the journey of faith are: “The very desire you have to know God is often the first whisper of His Spirit drawing you near. He promises in Jeremiah 29:13. It starts with a simple and sincere prayer. The God you are seeking is not hiding from you. He is closer than you think and waiting with open arms.”
