Winter warmers: Three hearty recipes to beat the chill

As winter settles in, there is nothing more comforting than a warm homemade meal shared around the table. From creamy soups to rich curries, seasonal dishes bring both nourishment and comfort during the colder months. Here are three easy and affordable winter warmer recipes perfect for family dinners or cosy weekends indoors.

 

Creamy Pumpkin Soup

Pumpkin soup remains a winter favourite because of its rich flavour and smooth texture.

Ingredients:

1 medium pumpkin, peeled and chopped

1 onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, crushed

2 tablespoons butter or oil

4 cups vegetable or chicken stock

1 cup fresh cream or milk

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh parsley for garnish

Method:

  • In a large pot, sauté the onion and garlic in butter until soft. Add the pumpkin pieces and cook for five minutes.
  • Pour in the stock and simmer until the pumpkin becomes tender.
  • Blend the mixture until smooth, then return it to the pot.
  • Stir in cream or milk and season with salt and pepper. Serve hot with toasted bread and garnish with parsley.

 

Spicy Bean Curry

Packed with flavour and protein, bean curry is a satisfying meal that pairs perfectly with rice or bread.

Ingredients:

2 cups cooked sugar beans or red kidney beans

1 onion, chopped

2 tomatoes, chopped

2 tablespoons curry powder

1 teaspoon paprika

2 cloves garlic, crushed

1 tablespoon tomato paste

2 tablespoons cooking oil

Salt to taste

Fresh coriander for garnish

Method:

  • Heat oil in a pan and fry onions and garlic until golden brown. Add tomatoes, tomato paste, curry powder and paprika, allowing the spices to cook for a few minutes.
  • Stir in the beans and simmer for 15 minutes until thick and flavourful.
  • Garnish with coriander and serve with steamed rice or chapati.

 

Hearty Chicken and Vegetable Stew

A classic chicken stew filled with vegetables is ideal for warming up after a cold day.

Ingredients:

500g chicken pieces

2 potatoes, cubed

2 carrots, sliced

1 onion, chopped

1 cup green beans

2 tablespoons tomato sauce

3 cups chicken stock

2 tablespoons cooking oil

Salt, pepper and mixed herbs to taste

Method:

  • Brown the chicken pieces in oil, then add onions and cook until soft.
  • Add the potatoes, carrots and green beans before stirring in the tomato sauce and stock.
  • Season with herbs, salt and pepper.
  • Cover and simmer for 35–40 minutes until the chicken is tender and the vegetables are cooked through. Serve hot with rice, pap or fresh bread.

 

These simple winter recipes are budget-friendly, filling and perfect for bringing warmth to the table during the cold season.
