MBABANE – The Made In Eswatini mark of origin has officially been registered as a trademark.
This marks a major milestone in the country’s drive to promote local production, strengthen brand protection and grow youth-led enterprises.
The announcement was made by A Peculiar People patron Princess Sakhizwe during the official signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between A Peculiar People and the Youth Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Eswatini on Monday.
Addressing stakeholders, young entrepreneurs and partners, Princess Sakhizwe described the moment as both personal and national in significance, highlighting how the Made in Eswatini initiative has evolved from a simple concept into a powerful movement for economic sovereignty.
“Today is such a proud and meaningful moment for me as a young person. I stand with you today, at the heart of a partnership that speaks directly to the future of our country,” she said.
She noted that what began as a call to ‘choose local’ had grown into a deeper national commitment to producing and consuming Eswatini-made goods, reinforcing economic independence through everyday choices.
“Our sovereignty is expressed not only in words, but in action – what we choose to produce, and what we choose to consume,” she added.
Princess Sakhizwe emphasised that the MoU signing was more than a ceremonial gesture, describing it as a practical step towards unlocking opportunities for young people through collaboration, innovation, and market access.
“Today’s signing is not just a formality. It is a statement of shared intent. It tells us that when collaboration is guided by purpose and integrity, it can unlock opportunity and create real value for young people,” she said.
She challenged young entrepreneurs to seize the moment, describing import substitution as a generational responsibility now placed in the hands of the youth.
“To our young people, the door is open. Import substitution has been placed in our hands as the youth. Let this day be remembered as the moment we decided that the wealth of our nation must first nourish the land and the people from which it comes,” she said.
Princess Sakhizwe also praised the youth chamber for creating platforms that move beyond problem identification to offering tangible solutions, encouraging young innovators to bring forward their ideas, products and services.
“The Youth Chamber has done its part. Bring forward your ideas, your products, your solutions. We are ready to wear what you create, to consume what you produce, to bask in your innovation and to grow through your success,” she said.
She further expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade for certifying the Made in Eswatini mark, confirming that the certification paved the way for its official registration as a trademark.
She urged local brands to follow suit by securing intellectual property protection, noting that trademark registration would help businesses confidently use the Made in Eswatini Mark while safeguarding their revenue streams and original concepts.
