As schools gear up for the crucial Mock Exam season, learners are busy sharpening their pencils and their minds. However, while many learners rely solely on class notes and textbooks, education experts and experienced sellers of study material say there’s one proven secret to exam success: Past exam papers and revision booklets.

According to a long-time distributor of educational resources and study packs in Mbabane, learners who invest in past exam papers and booklets often have a clearer idea of what to expect and perform far better. “Past papers are like a blueprint of the exam. When learners use them to prepare, they familiarise themselves with the format, the questioning style and the way marks are allocated. It’s like walking into a room you’ve already visited before nothing catches you off guard,” they explained.  “Booklets summarise large topics and help learners revise smarter, not harder. And when you combine that with timed practice using real exam questions, the difference in confidence and results is huge.”

Lungile Dlamini, a high school teacher at a school in Manzini, supports the use of past papers and says she has seen the impact first-hand.

“Every year, the learners who do consistent past paper practice perform better in mocks and finals. It’s not just about knowledge, it’s about exam technique. Many learners know the content but struggle with how to approach the questions. Past papers bridge that gap,” she said.

She added that these papers often repeat certain themes or question types, especially in subjects like Mathematics, History and English Language.

“If you look at past English Paper 2s, for example, you will notice patterns in how comprehension and summary questions are asked. Once a learner has tackled enough of these, they go into the exam prepared and focused.” Mock exams are more than just a trial run they often determine how seriously a learner is taken when final preparations begin. They help teachers identify areas of weakness and offer learners a chance to test themselves under real exam pressure.

Using booklets and past exam papers ensure that learners are not revising blindly. Instead, they are studying with purpose and precision.

With the rise in demand during this time of year, sellers have made these materials available at affordable prices, even offering subject bundles to cover all key topics. “Parents are starting to understand that this is an investment. One good mock exam result can build a child’s confidence for the rest of the year,” he added.

In the competitive and high-pressure world of examinations, preparation is everything. And as educators and resource providers alike suggest, supplementing study time with past papers and booklets might just be the smartest decision a learner can make this mock season.

For parents and learners looking for revision materials, visit your nearest stationery or study material outlet or speak to your school to find out where to access past papers relevant to your syllabus.
