MANZINI – Some emaSwati have expressed their dissatisfaction with the standard of the synthetic track at the Somhlolo National Stadium in Lobamba.

The Swaziland National Association for Teachers (SNAT) also expressed its concerns over the standard of the synthetic track at Somhlolo National Stadium, where they took to their official Facebook page.

Eswatini is hosting three countries in the Confederation of School Sports Association of Southern Africa (COSSASA) Games.

These are South Africa, Lesotho and Zimbabwe. “We saw some female emaSwati athletes running barefooted on the polyurethane (synthetic) track surface at Somhlolo Stadium today (Monday) during the COSSASA Games. Athletes from other countries use running spikes and track shoes,” read their statement.

Their remarks further stated that at this level of the competition, the Eswatini athletes represent the country.

They further expressed optimism on the same platform, stating that it is better that a E6.15 billion Olympic National Stadium will be built in the 2026/27 Financial Year.

Moreover, over E100 million was pumped by government to renovate Somhlolo Stadium, where the initial budget for the renovations was E38 million.

It was further reported that E19 million is yet to be spent at the Stadium to ensure full compliance with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards. “We hope the E19 million includes a new synthetic track,” further read the statement.

Meanwhile, Instacash Managing Director (MD), Mandla ‘Cheeks’ also shared his sentiments on the youngsters running barefooted, while it is worth mentioning that the T-shirts worn by Eswatini are courtesy of Instacash.
