One of the things that landlords often struggle with is improving security for rental property occupants, particularly when it comes to installing CCTV cameras.

Given the way privacy laws work, can landlords even put-up security cameras in the first place? According to Samkeliso Makhubu, the Senior Housing Officer in the Ministry of Housing and Development, there is no law put in place disputing that landlords should not instal CCTV cameras on their properties.

“It is wise, though, that the landlord ensures this is solely for security and not violating the tenants’ privacy,” he advised.

“As Yadah Technologies we make sure all property owner or tenants are aware of the cameras and consent to being recorded. Cameras are legal for the purposes of keeping the property safe, not for spying on tenants,” mentioned Blessing Dube.

The importance of security for rental property

Dube says; “Having an automated gate is another vital security benefit some landlords can look into. Extra security measures can also be added if you feel they might be helpful to you. Privacy is another added advantage, as no one can enter without permission, should you not wish to be disturbed or interrupted.” Here are some benefits of securing your property with electric gates that he shares to help property owners:

It keeps pets and children safe, as it keeps them within the bounds of the property.
