Most of us have a dream car. You know the one – the car you imagine pulling into your driveway, even though your bank account has already filed an objection. For some, it is a classic. For others, it is a supercar that looks like it belongs in a Hollywood blockbuster, but every now and then, a car arrives that makes even the wildest dream garage look ordinary. Enter the Bugatti Destrier, a machine that feels less like a car and more like someone sculpted speed itself.
A sculpture with attitude
The Destrier is the third one-of-one creation from Bugatti’s Solitaire programme, taking the extreme carbon-fibre foundation of the Bolide and transforming it into something far more elegant. At just one metre tall, the Destrier sits dramatically low, while its 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels give it an almost cartoonishly imposing stance. Yet there is nothing excessive about its design. Bugatti has deliberately stripped away wings, vents and aerodynamic clutter to let the proportions do the talking.
… and boy, do they talk. The cabin crouches between the front wheels like a powerful horse ready to pounce, while the body narrows dramatically behind the doors before swelling over the rear wheels.
A nod to Bugatti royalty
The Destrier also carries echoes of Bugatti’s legendary past. Its lineage can be traced to the philosophy of the Type 57 chassis, which produced both Le Mans-winning racers and the iconic Type 57SC Atlantic. A dedication plate above the windscreen pays tribute to both.
Luxury meets craftsmanship
Inside, things get even more special. Leather and nubuck in warm ‘Ambre Voyageur’, alongside a sophisticated 3D-knitted textile threaded with copper yarn, create a cabin more reminiscent of a tailor’s atelier than a race car.
And yes, it has a monster heart
Underneath that beautiful body sits the Bolide’s 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16, producing a staggering 1 600 PS. Yet Bugatti insists the Destrier’s real story is not about chasing performance figures, it is about proportion, beauty and craftsmanship.
Perhaps that is what makes it so special: the Destrier doesn’t simply look like a dream car. It looks like the dream car your dream car dreams about.
