Is your mattress ageing too fast?

Lots of us just put our mattress on the bed and forget about it, we don’t realise that we should be flipping and rotating it and that’s a mistake.

When you sleep in the same place every night, you’re constantly putting weight on the same springs and foam. Over time, this pressure causes those spots to break down faster, creating sags and body impressions where you lie most.

If you don’t flip or rotate your mattress, it’ll get lumpy and uncomfortable way sooner than it should. One of the best ways to extend the life of your mattress is by turning or rotating it regularly.

Believe it or not, turning your mattress can help it last longer and keep it feeling comfortable. After all, we spend a significant amount of time lying on it, so it’s bound to show some wear over time.

By turning it over and rotating (turning it 180 degrees so the head is now at the foot), you spread out the wear and tear evenly across the whole surface. This keeps your mattress supportive, makes it last longer and helps you keep getting a good night’s sleep.

This is especially true for memory foam mattresses, which are notorious for developing body imprints. Well, it also depends on the type of mattress you have.

General recommendations

For most mattresses, it is recommended to turn or rotate them every three to six months. However, this can vary depending on the type of mattress you have.

Here are some general guidelines:

Memory foam mattresses: These should be rotated every three months to avoid body impressions. Memory foam is softer and tends to conform to your body shape, so regular rotation is key.

Hybrid and innerspring mattresses: For these, every three to six months is ideal. They are a bit more resilient than memory foam, but they can still benefit from regular rotation.

Double-sided mattresses: If your mattress can be flipped (in addition to being rotated), aim to flip it every six months. These mattresses are designed to be slept on both sides, so make the most of it.

Benefits of flipping your mattress

Flipping your mattress can improve your health: By keeping your mattress in good shape, your body will experience maximum sleep support. This means that your spine will be aligned, reducing the chance of waking up with neck and back pain.

You will also feel more comfortable during sleep, which makes conditions ripe for longer stretches of quality rest. Good sleep and proper sleeping positions have been linked to better health, so making conditions optimal for sleep is essential for your well-being.

Flipping your mattress can reduce allergens: Flipping your mattress makes it easy to do routine maintenance cleaning. When over 20 million people are allergic to mattress allergens like dust mites, it is important to do everything you can do to reduce their numbers. Regularly flipping and vacuuming your mattress can decrease the numbers of pesky allergens by not having just one side exposed to our old skin cells and indoor dust.

When all these benefits await you, the five minutes it takes to flip your mattress become a negligible investment towards great returns on your health. Addition information sources from sleep foundation.
